McCall released her she moved out of his reach. After glancing at him to make sure he stood out of harm's way D.J. forced everything from her mind but the job at hand and inched toward the door.
The tinny taste disappeared from her throat after another swallow, and D.J. relaxed a bit. Standing just inside the bathroom to avoid being in the line of fire from the door, she repeated McCall's questionlouder and with more force. "Who's there?"
"It's just the maid, dear. Relax and open the door. But put away the gun first, or you'll scare the poor child to death."
Josie.
D.J. looked up. The angel didn't hover overhead, though her voice issued from that direction. "Where are you?" she whispered.
"I'm outside the door, watching your very dangerous-looking maid as she prepares to knock again."
"Why didn't she answer me?"
"She's got one of those headset thingees the young people like to wear. Whatever she's listening to, it must have a beatbecause she's dancing to it."
"Kids." D.J. left the protection of the bathroom to open the door.
Just as Josie had predicted, a young woman, perhaps seventeen or eighteen, stood next to a cart just outside the door. She swayed and dipped to an unheard beat as she piled towels into her arms. When she turned back toward the door and saw D.J. she smiled. Without a word the girl handed D.J. extra towels and bopped on down the hall.
